Chapter 17

ELIZABETH

While I was going to my parents’ the next morning, Nick was going to stop at the station to see if he could dig any deeper into Jon’s whereabouts. I hated that a part of me was nervous, not at the possibility of seeing Jon again, but knowing that Nick was going to do whatever he could to find him. Possibly putting himself in danger...

Not that I cared about him.

At all.

I wasn’t even convincing myself at this point.

The two of us were in a weird place now, though. After him asking me out—more like telling me he was taking me out, not that I minded it exactly—there was just a brush of awkwardness around us. I wasn’t sure if it was just me or both of us; I just hoped that it was gone by tonight when he was going to take me out.

As I pulled into my parents’ driveway, glancing behind myself to make sure that no unknown vehicles had followed me from my apartment, I stepped out of my car.

It was now or never. I made my bed and now it was time for me to lie in it. I’d made a choice to keep the truth from them when this had all started, and now I was going to face their wrath. I knew deep down that they wouldn’t be mad; they were going to be disappointed and hurt that I didn’t confide in them earlier.

“Hello?” I called out after I opened the front door.

“Sweetheart, I’m in the kitchen.” I could tell my sudden appearance surprised my mom.

I headed up the staircase and immediately spotted her; she was mixing something mouthwatering together in a large bowl.

“What are you making?” I was pretty sure that the drool was even dripping from the corner of my mouth.

“Just some cheesecake for dinner tonight. Do you want to stay and eat with us?”

I was just about to join them, but then I remembered my agreement with Nick.

“I would,” I hummed. “But I have plans for dinner tonight.” I wanted to tell her about Nick, but I was worried about how she would take the news. “Where’s Dad?” I didn’t want to have to go through this conversation more than once.

Mom motioned toward the back door with her chin. “He’s out doing some yard work.”

I hesitated before forcing the words past my dry mouth. “Can I talk to the two of you?”

“Of course.” She placed the bowl down in front of her, grabbing a towel from the sink to wipe her hands off, but instead of going to the back door, she sat next to me at the kitchen island. “There was something I wanted to ask you about first, though. And it would probably be best not to say it around your father.”

My eyebrows came together in confusion. “What is it?”

“I was at the salon yesterday and I heard something from one of the other gals. Something quite shocking.”

When she didn’t continue, I prompted her, “What was it?”

“Becky Filler said that she’s seen Nick Wilder’s truck at your apartment around the clock since you moved in.
